There’s a lot to like about the PlayStation 5, but the Slim model has always come with one big caveat. Unlike the original model, PS5 Slims required Internet access to activate the disc drive. While this pairing is a one-time process, it’s somewhat absurd to have a disc drive that’s inoperable without an initial Internet connection.

That requirement now appears to have changed, as spotted by X user modyfikatorcasper. The latest PS5 Slim model available in stores comes with a disc drive that’s been “factory-paired with the console.” This won’t make any difference for previously released PS5 Slims, but it should hopefully be the new standard going forward.

In addition to spotlighting the change, Modyfikatorcasper provides a few reference details. The latest model is the CFI-2116, and the factory firmware is 11.40. This, of course, only applies to the bundle that comes with a disc drive by default, and purchasing a Slim without a disc drive will still require pairing to add one.

This change effectively makes the PS5 Slim operate in the same way as the original PS5 model, which finalized its slow exit from stores sometime in 2024. The Slim also comes with a bit more storage, so as long as you can tolerate the somewhat Frankenstein design, it might now qualify as the superior model across the board.

Modyfikatorcasper’s post shouts out the most immediate advantages of the change, calling it “Fantastic news for future exploits and those planning system modifications.” Making the system easier to jailbreak definitely wasn’t Sony’s intent in factory-pairing the disc drive, but it’s a side effect that some fans will definitely appreciate.

It’s also a plus for longevity. If the apocalypse comes and knocks out the Internet, you should still be able to set up a brand-new PS5 and pop in a disc. As the world increasingly embraces digital services and temporary content licenses, it’s nice for some things to be truly permanent. Xbox is leaning into the service model, and Nintendo has caused physical collectors some grief with the recent introduction of Game-Key cards. With such spotty competition, emphasizing the physical side of things is an important asset for PlayStation’s brand.

That being said, the PS5 Slim’s factory-pairing solution may not be perfect. A reply from Sonic_Streaker mentions buying a factory-paired PS5 Slim several months ago and being forced to pair the drive again after a factory reset. Under the circumstances, though, this compromise might be the best that PlayStation 5 owners can hope for.
