One of these new comic storylines is Marvel Knights: The Punisher, which takes place some time around the present day, decades before the world plunges into the chaos that precedes A World To Come.

The Punisher Is Brainwashed Into Becoming “El Zombie”

Frank Castle has plenty of experience fighting all kinds of crime, from regular theft to the most heinous crimes imaginable. Drug trafficking poses no remarkable threat considering how often he comes across it. But this time it’s slightly different. The “Zombie” drug is rapidly rising as the deadliest and most lucrative synthetic drug in the market, and not because it’s addictive.
The Zombie drug’s kingpin, Armando Molerro, uses the very drug he traffics to eliminate all loose ends. Anyone who has a single whiff loses their free will. Since the Punisher gets himself caught, he goes through countless doses of the Z drug until he becomes Molerro’s new brainwashed henchman, inheritor of the nickname “El Zombie”.
The Punisher’s willpower is seriously impressive. It takes an astounding one hundred and twenty days, plus some additional corporal punishment, for Frank Castle to give in to the Zombie drug. Yet, the Punisher is still a human being with no superhuman enhancements. Once his mind and body yield, he becomes a pawn just like any of Armando Molerro’s victims.

It has been established that the Punisher’s moral code is simple but absolute. He’ll resort to the most savage torture and killing methods to torment criminals, but he’ll do his best not to harm innocents. Now, due to his botched encounter with Molerro’s original El Zombie henchman, Frank Castle has become the very monster he’s spent his life trying to destroy.
As El Zombie, Frank Castle is ordered to massacre an entire innocent family while they’re dining. This is a chilling inversion of the Punisher’s origin story. He’s forced to relive his family’s murder through his own actions. Knowing physical damage doesn’t really affect the Punisher, Molerro reopens the wound that defines him.
When he eventually regains control, the Punisher will face the unbearable truth that his war on crime was never clean. No matter how many lines he swore never to cross, violence always leaves collateral damage. The Zombie drug merely strips away the illusion of control, exposing how fragile Frank Castle’s self-righteous restraint truly is. The family’s murder is the ultimate punishment for Frank’s belief that killing could ever restore moral order to the world.
