Kylian Mbappé’s departure from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) to Real Madrid this summer has taken a contentious turn, as the French forward’s legal team has reportedly reached out to UEFA and the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) in pursuit of €55 million in unpaid wages, Soccernet.football understands.
This sum includes a €36 million signing-on bonus, the last three months of his PSG salary, and an ‘ethics bonus’ for the period of April to June 2024.
According to the French newspaper Le Monde as per TuttoNapoli, the 25-year-old believes that PSG have failed to honour their financial commitments, prompting his legal team to seek intervention from European football’s governing body.
The consequences for PSG could be severe if the issue remains unresolved. The LFP has the authority to impose a transfer ban on the club, while UEFA could revoke PSG’s club licence, potentially barring them from participating in this season’s UEFA Champions League.
This legal dispute follows Mbappé’s decision not to renew his contract with PSG, which led to his exclusion from the club’s pre-season tour in Asia. Reports suggest that PSG President Nasser al-Khelaifi attempted to negotiate a deal with Mbappé to forgo an €80 million loyalty bonus, which the player declined.
Mbappé has since made his competitive debut for Real Madrid, scoring in the UEFA Super Cup final against Atalanta. However, his La Liga debut was less successful, as Real Madrid were held to a 1-1 draw against Mallorca.
