Red Dead Redemption, which originally released in 2010, has gotten a new ESRB rating for all current-gen platforms. Although nothing has been officially confirmed yet, it’s a surprising update given the rumors swirling around a remaster for Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2. However, it seems to be the biggest confirmation so far that an RDR remaster may be on its way.
The new ESRB rating for Red Dead Redemption is for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the ESRB has rated the game M for Mature, citing “Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, [and] Use of Drugs.” It is worth noting that the listing is simply for Red Dead Redemption, rather than a title with “Remaster” or “Remake.”

RDR On Nintendo Switch 2 & More
Red Dead Redemption came to the Switch in 2023, and then was added to PC the following year. Getting the first Red Dead Redemption game onto modern consoles like PS5 and the Switch 2 makes sense. However, given how persistent rumors that 2018’s RDR2 is coming to Switch 2 have been, the ESRB’s rating is a bit unexpected.
Those rumors had stated RDR2 would come to the new consoles in 2025, but with November nearing its halfway mark, the chances are looking increasingly slim. It’s possible that the first Red Dead Redemption was always the plan, even if it’s not a remastered version many fans have been hoping for.
Rockstar Is No Stranger To Remasters Of Its Games

Red Dead Redemption developer Rockstar Games is no stranger to remasters or re-releasing its games on newer consoles. GTA Trilogy remasters were met with heavy criticism upon their release in 2021. However, it kickstarted a host of rumors regarding remakes or remasters for other Rockstar titles like RDR2, GTA 4, and Bully.
Because nothing official has come out regarding Red Dead Redemption on Switch 2, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, it’s best to take the ESRB’s rating with a grain of salt until we know more. For those wanting to see RDR2 updated on more modern consoles, it’s hopefully a step toward making that a reality. Rockstar could simply be releasing the first game ahead of getting its sequel on those same platforms. Hopefully, more updates will be provided soon.
