THE Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has urged residents along the banks of Rivers Niger and Benue to relocate immediately to safer areas to protect their lives and property.

In a statement today, NIHSA’s Director General, Umar Mohammed, confirmed that water levels in the rivers have steadily risen to the danger point.

He called on citizens to take the agency’s warnings seriously by taking necessary precautions such as clearing drainages and gutters to allow for proper water run-off.

Mohammed also highlighted the prolonged rainfall across the country, which has triggered destructive flash floods.

He reiterated NIHSA’s commitment to managing and developing the nation’s water resources, noting that the agency will continue to monitor water levels in major rivers and their tributaries daily, issuing flood warnings, alerts, and predictions as needed.

“NIHSA is working proactively with emergency response agencies and the media to help safeguard lives and property, mitigate the impact of flooding, enhance food security, and promote national resilience through sustainable water resources management,” the statement concluded.
