Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, spokesperson of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), says the party’s central objective is to remove President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from power as a necessary step to rescue Nigeria from what he described as an unprecedented governance crisis.
Abdullahi made the comment on Friday during an interview on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television.
“It’s solely to get Tinubu out of power. There is no scenario where he remains in power, and we are able to save this country,” he said.
The ADC spokesman said Nigeria has been hijacked, arguing that the conduct of the current administration reflects what he described as a bandit mentality.
“When people say you can smash it, grab it, and run with it, that is the language of banditry,” he said.
Abdullahi said such an attitude now defines the mindset of Tinubu’s administration.
The former minister also raised concerns over what he described as legislative manipulation, particularly in relation to recent tax laws.
He said recent developments were unprecedented in Nigeria’s democratic history.
Abdullahi accused the government of forging a law that had already been duly passed by the national assembly.
“A government that can forge a duly passed law; what do you call that?” he asked.
Speaking on reports that the federal government paid $9 million to foreign lobbyists in the United States to improve Nigeria’s image, Abdullahi said the process lacked transparency and legality.
He said he had reviewed documents related to the deal and found no clear accountability framework.
“Is it a bad thing to lobby? No, it’s not a bad thing. But how was this contract awarded? How was the money paid? Who paid the money? What budget line was it taken from? How was the money transferred out of Nigeria?” Abdullahi asked.
He said the expenditure reflected misplaced priorities by the government.
“If you invest nine million dollars in internal security, you will see results. You won’t have to convince the president of another country that your country is safe,” he added.
Abdullahi accused the government of prioritising foreign perception over the security challenges faced daily by Nigerians.
“They don’t care whether Nigerians are still dying. They don’t care that people are still being killed; they just want to look good before Americans,” Abdullahi lamented.
He also expressed concern over a recently signed medical memorandum of understanding between Nigeria and the United States.
Abdullahi said details of the agreement had not been made public, despite Nigeria reportedly contributing more financially.
He described the terms as “shocking” and raised concerns about sovereignty and accountability.
