NJC Clears the Air on Nnamdi Kanu’s Release

FCT, Abuja – The National Judicial Council (NJC) has dismissed widespread claims that Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been released and sent back to Kenya.

In an official statement issued on Thursday, March 20, in Abuja, Kemi Ogedengbe, NJC’s Deputy Director of Information, described these reports as false and misleading.

No Court Ruling Ordered Kanu’s Release

The NJC clarified that Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), never issued any ruling or directive regarding Kanu’s release or deportation.

“The council wishes to state that the reports making rounds are completely unfounded. There has been no court ruling or official pronouncement from the Hon. CJN regarding Nnamdi Kanu’s release or repatriation to Kenya,” the statement read.

The council further explained that Justice Kekere-Ekun has never presided over any case related to Kanu at the Supreme Court. Additionally, there has been no formal communication or apology issued to the Kenyan government concerning Kanu’s arrest and extradition.

Kanu’s Legal Battle Continues

Despite the rumors, Nnamdi Kanu remains in custody, facing terrorism-related charges filed by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

• He was first arrested in 2015 after returning from the UK.
• Granted bail in 2017, he later fled the country.
• Re-arrested in Kenya in 2021, he was extradited to Nigeria, where he has been in detention under the Department of State Services (DSS).

His legal team has been pushing for a fresh trial, and his case is set to continue on Friday, March 21, before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Public Urged to Disregard Misinformation

The NJC warned against the spread of fake news, urging Nigerians to rely on credible sources for updates on Kanu’s case. The council reassured the public of its commitment to judicial integrity and due process.
