Reps Deputy Chief Whip Onanuga dies At 59

Born on December 2, 1965, the lawmaker died yesterday, January 15, 2025, after a brief illness, at the age of 59.

Onanuga was serving as the Deputy Chief Whip at the time of her death, representing the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State.

In a statement, the Green Chamber expressed deep sorrow over the unexpected loss of who they called a “passionate advocate.”

A Vibrant Lawmaker

Reps spokesman Akin Rotimi highlighted Onanuga’s significant contributions to Nigeria’s political scene, noting her dedication to creating a better society and her unwavering commitment to public service.

“Affectionately known as ‘Ijaya,’ Rep. Onanuga’s intellect, passion, humility, and pursuit of excellence earned her the respect of both her colleagues and constituents,” he said.

He extended heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, associates, and the Government and People of Ogun State—especially the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North constituency—as well as the entire National Assembly membership.

“As we grieve the loss of this vibrant and dedicated lawmaker, whose life was devoted to improving the conditions of Nigerians, especially her constituents, her legacy of service and commitment will continue to inspire future generations.”

Funeral arrangements will be announced by her family at a later date. May her soul rest in peace, and may her legacy continue to inspire many.

Monumental Loss

The governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun expressed sympathy to the family of the late lawmaker.

In his condolence message, he described Onanuga’s passing as a devastating and shocking loss, emphasizing that her death represents a significant loss to Ogun State and Nigeria as a whole.

The governor described the deceased as a courageous leader, a loyal party member, and an influential mobilizer who made substantial contributions to advancing women’s rights and the welfare of her constituents until her last moments.

Onanuga was first elected to the House in 2019 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

During her tenure, she served as Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development in the 9th Assembly, where she advocated for policies to empower women and enhance social welfare. Re-elected in 2023, she held the position of Deputy Chief Whip in the 10th Assembly.
