The House of Representatives was thrown into chaos on Tuesday, November 4, following a motion seeking an investigation into the alleged illegal and criminal allocation of Federal Government lands at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex.
The motion, sponsored by Ademorin Kuye (APC, Lagos), called for the setting up of an ad hoc committee to probe the alleged land irregularities.
However, the proposal immediately sparked tension among lawmakers, leading to a heated exchange on the floor of the House.
Several members strongly opposed Kuye’s motion, arguing that the matter fell within the jurisdiction of the House Committee on Commerce, which they said should handle the investigation instead of creating a new ad hoc committee.
Despite the protests, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the session, ruled in favour of Kuye’s motion after a voice vote was taken.
The decision further infuriated some lawmakers who accused the presiding officer of bias and refused to back subsequent motions brought before the chamber.
Tensions escalated as some members began shouting down colleagues who attempted to present new motions, insisting that no further legislative business should continue until the matter was revisited.
Efforts by the Deputy Speaker and senior members to restore order proved abortive, as aggrieved lawmakers continued to express anger over what they described as procedural injustice.
Amid the uproar, the Deputy Speaker was forced to call for an executive session, temporarily suspending the open plenary to allow for closed-door consultations aimed at restoring calm.
