The House of Representatives has launched a full-scale investigation into the alleged killing of eight unarmed women, including a 13-year-old girl, during a protest in Lamurde Local Government Area of Adamawa State, reportedly involving Nigerian military personnel.
This follows a motion of urgent public importance moved on Wednesday by Rep. Kwamoti Laori (Adamawa), who raised concerns over rising violence and military involvement in civilian unrest in the area.
Laori told the House that the victims were part of a peaceful demonstration when they were allegedly gunned down, adding that more than 30 others sustained life-threatening injuries and are currently receiving treatment at hospitals in Numan and Yola.
He said, “The killing of eight unarmed women including a 13-year-old by personnel of the Nigerian Military during a peaceful demonstration in Lamurde LGA and injuring over 30 others, is tragic.
“This tragic incident mirrors similar occurrences in Dong, Kodomti, Lawaru, Nzuruwe, and Shaforon communities in 2017, where civilians suffered at the hands of security personnel without any meaningful investigation, prosecution, or compensation, suggesting a troubling pattern of impunity.”
Laori condemned the alleged shootings as “inhumane, unjustifiable, and a gross violation of fundamental human rights guaranteed under the Constitution.”
He warned that inaction could further fuel tensions in already volatile communities grappling with longstanding insecurity driven by armed groups and kidnappers.
In its resolution, the House directed the Committees on Human Rights, Defence, and Internal Security to conduct a fact-finding visit to Lamurde and report back within two weeks.
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, who presided over the session, also instructed the Committee on Legislative Compliance to monitor the implementation of the House’s directives.
