A new Resident Evil game has been announced for release later this month. The long-running survival horror series is now in a full-blown renaissance, alternating remakes of classics like Resident Evil 4 and brand-new titles like Resident Evil Requiem. Although its next major entry is still a good few months away, a new Resident Evil release is set to launch much sooner.
Resident Evil Survival Unit will be released on November 18 for iOS and Android devices. It builds on the Resident Evil legacy, featuring characters and settings from throughout the franchise. It’s already available for pre-registration on the App Store and Google Play, and, perhaps most importantly, it’s free-to-play.
RE Survival Unit Features A Twist On Classic Gameplay
Strategic Survival
Set in a universe parallel to that of the mainline RE games, Resident Evil Survival Unit tells an original story featuring a diverse cast of characters from across the series. You’ll be able to recruit Leon Kennedy, Ada Wong, Jill Valentine, Claire and Chris Redfield, Carlos Oliveira, and more to your squad of survivors.
The bulk of the gameplay features real-time strategy battles. You’ll assemble a team, embark on missions, and duke it out with monsters and rival survivors alike. Each character comes with a unique set of skills and traits to employ in battle, and environmental factors add further strategic depth.
There’s also a management sim aspect: between missions, you’ll return to The Mansion, which you can upgrade by purchasing items from RE4’s iconic Merchant.
Resident Evil Survival Unit also features a collaboration with one of gaming’s most prolific artists: Final Fantasy character and logo designer Yoshitaka Amano. As a guest designer, Amano created the original monster Mortem, an “eerie presence” designed to create “psychological unease,” per Survival Unit‘s official website.
How To Claim Your Preorder Bonus

Whether you preorder it or not, though, Resident Evil Survival Unit will hit mobile app stores on November 18. Its different approach to survival horror gameplay might not totally scratch that old-school RE itch, but it could be an interesting way to bridge the gap until the next major Resident Evil game, Requiem, is released.
