WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature that allows users to access their end-to-end encrypted backups using passkeys. With this update, if a user loses their device, they can restore their WhatsApp backup using a fingerprint, face recognition, or the screen lock code from their previous device, eliminating the need to remember complex passwords or encryption keys.
Previously, WhatsApp offered end-to-end encryption for backups using either passwords or 64-character encryption keys. However, the process required users to have the password or key available when restoring their chat history. Passkeys simplify this process, making encrypted backups more accessible and user-friendly.
The Meta-owned messaging platform, which reached over 3 billion active users in May 2025, said the passkey feature will gradually roll out over the coming weeks and months. Users can enable encrypted backups and check for passkey support by navigating to Settings > Chats > Chat Backup > End-to-End Encrypted Backup.
This development comes amid Meta’s broader push to enhance privacy and security across its platforms. In August, WhatsApp launched several tools aimed at protecting users from online scams in both group and individual chats. The company reported banning more than 6.8 million accounts linked to scam operations worldwide and introduced alerts that notify users when they are added to unfamiliar groups, helping them make informed decisions before engaging with unknown contacts.
With passkeys, WhatsApp takes another step toward safeguarding user data while streamlining access to encrypted backups.
