Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, has joined the host of other people in mourning the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a patriot whose legacy will not be forgotten anytime soon.

It was reported that Buhari passed away on Sunday in a London hospital where he had been receiving medical treatment for an undisclosed illness.

Buhari’s death sparked mixed reactions on Sunday, with many pouring tributes while some Nigerians expressed regret over the happenings under his administration.

Naijaonpoint reports that the former military ruler-turned-democratic leader served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023.

Reacting to the news of his passing, Ribadu, in a statement posted Monday morning, described Buhari as a leader who gave his all to the country.

“I join my fellow compatriots in mourning the passing of our revered erstwhile president, H.E President Muhammadu Buhari,” the NSA said.

“He would be remembered for his indelible records of service, patriotism, and strict sense of duty to our nation and its people. May Allah grant him eternal rest.”

Naijaonpoint reports that while in office, Buhari’s health was often a source of public speculation. During his second term, he spent long stretches abroad on medical leave, most notably in 2017, when he was away for 104 consecutive days.

Buhari is reported to have spent over 225 days receiving medical care abroad during his presidency, mostly in the United Kingdom.

The true nature of his illness was never made public until the news of his death.
