The Government of Malawi has issued a security alert for Malawian motorists traveling through Mozambique, particularly in the Moatize district of Tete Province, following reports of attacks by unidentified assailants.

In a statement released on March 23, 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed receiving reports of growing insecurity affecting Malawian drivers using Mozambican routes. The government is currently engaging Mozambican authorities to address the situation through diplomatic channels.

According to the ministry, Mozambican security forces have intensified patrols and implemented security maneuvers in Moatize town and surrounding areas, including Mameme 1, Mameme 2, Kapilizanji, and Musacama. These locations have reportedly become hotspots for attacks targeting foreign motorists, particularly those from Malawi.

“Malawian motorists passing through Tete Province who find themselves in insecure situations are advised to report to the nearest police station,” the statement read.

Authorities have urged drivers to remain cautious, avoid traveling at night, and stay updated on security developments in the affected areas. The Malawian government continues to monitor the situation closely.
