THE Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Rtd), today swore in 23 newly elected Local Government Chairmen, shortly after they received their certificates of return from the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).
Speaking at the ceremony, Ibas reminded the new council leaders that holding public office is a responsibility to serve, not a platform for personal gain.
He urged them to uphold integrity, transparency, and accountability while focusing on grassroots development.
“This victory is not a prize to be enjoyed but a burden to be carried. It is not an entitlement, but a duty. It is not a call to self-interest, but to selfless service,” Ibas declared.
The retired naval chief praised the peaceful conduct of the August 30 local government elections, describing the exercise as a milestone in restoring constitutional order following President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in March.
He also commended voters for their discipline and RSIEC for organizing what he called a credible, violence-free poll.
Ibas charged the newly sworn-in chairmen to work closely with traditional rulers, security agencies, and community leaders to ensure peace and stability.
He emphasized that peace is the foundation of development and urged them to support small businesses, improve local infrastructure, strengthen education, and boost local economies.
He further directed the chairmen to cooperate with the ongoing biometric enrollment of local government staff to enhance payroll management and proper planning.
The Administrator also expressed appreciation to the outgoing Council Administrators for their contributions during what he described as a crucial period in the state’s political history.
