Rivers APC asks Fubara to resign within 48 hours or face impeachment

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), led by Tony Okocha, has called on Governor Siminalayi Fubara to resign within 48 hours or face impeachment proceedings.

Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, Okocha declared that the recent Supreme Court ruling regarding the ongoing political crisis in the state was final and must be respected.

He further described the invitation extended to the Martin Amaewhule-led faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly as a “Greek gift,” implying that it was a futile gesture.

“The invitation to the lawmakers is a Greek gift. The Supreme Court judgment is final, and there is nothing anyone can do about it. The only option left for the governor now is to resign, or he will face impeachment,” Okocha stated.

Rivers State has been engulfed in political turmoil, particularly due to the ongoing rift between Governor Fubara and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

On February 28, the Supreme Court upheld the decision of a Federal High Court that prohibited the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Accountant-General of the Federation from releasing statutory monthly allocations to the state. Additionally, the court ordered the Amaewhule-led faction of the House of Assembly, along with other elected members, to resume their duties.

The Amaewhule faction, which consists of 27 lawmakers loyal to Wike, had their seats restored by the ruling. Furthermore, the Supreme Court nullified the local government election that took place on October 5, 2024, in Rivers State.

Following the judgment, the Amaewhule-led assembly resumed its sessions and called on the governor to present the 2025 budget for consideration.

In response, Fubara, through a letter from the Secretary to the State Government dated March 7, 2025, invited the Amaewhule-led lawmakers to a meeting at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Monday.

The letter acknowledged the Supreme Court’s decision that reinstated the Amaewhule-led assembly.
