THE Rivers State House of Assembly today, urged the state’s Chief Judge to establish a panel to investigate allegations of gross misconduct against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.
The call, passed through a unanimous vote, signals the lawmakers’ determination to pursue the impeachment process.
At a press briefing in Port Harcourt, Deputy Speaker Dumle Maol accused Governor Fubara of using intimidation tactics and acting in ways that erode public trust, making him unfit to manage the ongoing crises in the oil-rich state.
Lawmakers further alleged that the governor violated provisions of the 1999 Constitution, leaving the assembly with no choice but to exercise its legislative powers to impeach him.
They also accused Fubara and his deputy of attempting to intimidate parliament but expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for intervening in the crisis.
The assembly members called on Speaker Martin Amaewhule to reconvene the House.
Notably, four lawmakers who had previously advocated for a political resolution reversed their stance, backing the continuation of the impeachment proceedings. Following the press briefing, the House moved into a plenary session to formalize the decision.
During plenary, the assembly unanimously approved a motion to investigate the alleged gross misconduct.
Speaker Amaewhule confirmed the House’s decision and formally requested the Chief Judge to set up the investigative panel.
