Rivers crisis: Wike confirms Fubara’s reconciliation visit, says ‘he came with two APC governors’

Wike, the immediate past governor of Rivers State, said this on Monday following reports that Fubara, who was suspended earlier in the year, visited the FCT minister.

“Yes, he visited,” Wike said during a media parley with select journalists in Abuja.

 “He came to me with two governors and one elder statesman. Just that they are both APC governors. He said he wants peace,” he added.

According to sources familiar with the meeting, Fubara was joined by Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru, and former Ogun Governor Olusegun Osoba.

The group reportedly entered Wike’s home unannounced but without resistance, indicating a longstanding familiarity between the two political rivals.

A source close to the development said, “Fubara walked straight into Wike’s living room because that’s a familiar terrain,” highlighting their previous political alliance, which has since deteriorated into a fierce power struggle.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had suspended Fubara, his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu; and members of the State House of Assembly for six months.

Tinubu also declared a state of emergency in Rivers State while appointing a Sole Administrator, retired naval chief, Ibok-Ete Ibas.

The suspension was a countermeasure by the president to prevent further escalation of the political crisis in Rivers State.

Rivers State crisis was due to the face-off between Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike.

The duo were battling for the control of the political resources in the state, a situation that almost snowballed into a full security issue, following threats by Niger Delta militants to attack oil installations in the state.
