WATCH THE VIDEO HERE THE Former council chairmen from 21 of Rivers State’s 23 local government areas (LGAs) protested today in their respective council areas. The Former Chairman Onengiyeofori George and his followers marched through Buguma, the council headquarters of the Asari-Toru LGA, gyrating to songs in solidarity with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike. They held posters with inscriptions urging the police to continue occupying the council headquarters. Some of the inscriptions read “Sim Fubara Can’t Continue to Act As He Likes” and “There’s No Vacancy in Asari-Toru Council”. The pro-Wike former LGA bosses protested in their local councils despite the Rivers State Police Command’s warning against protests. Some people protested at Abonnema, the headquarters of the Akuku-Toru LGA council, in support of the police’s continuing closure of council premises. Recall that last Tuesday, the police took over the council secretariats of the 23 LGAs in the oil-rich South-South, following the crisis that erupted over the three-year tenure expiration of the former LGA chairmen which reportedly led to the death of three persons. Governor Siminalayi Fubara swore in 23 new caretaker chairmen, but the police continue to barricade council facilities in all LGAs, preventing both parties from getting access and preventing a breakdown in peace and order.
