THE Rivers State Government has inaugurated a Farmer-Herder Committee aimed at addressing the recurring conflicts between farmers and herders across the state.

At the inauguration ceremony in Port Harcourt yesterday, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Ibibia Worika, who also chairs the committee, emphasized the urgent need to resolve disputes that have led to loss of lives, displacement, and disruptions in the agricultural sector—one of Nigeria’s economic pillars.

Worika noted that the move reflects the commitment of the state’s Administrator, Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, to fostering dialogue, ensuring justice, and promoting peaceful coexistence among communities.

“This committee has been established as a proactive measure to detect early warning signs of conflict, mediate disputes through community-based, non-violent solutions, and ensure both grazing and farming activities are conducted within legal and environmental frameworks,” Worika said.

He added that the committee will also advise the government on sustainable land use, pasture development, water resource management, and community engagement through sensitization and advocacy.

Worika highlighted the inclusive nature of the committee, which comprises representatives from the traditional institutions, security agencies, farmers’ and herders’ groups, civil society organizations, and key ministries including agriculture, local government, and justice.

He urged members to carry out their responsibilities with fairness, wisdom, and diligence.

“Beyond preventing conflict, our goal is to build trust and foster partnerships that support both economic growth and peace,” he stated.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture will serve as the committee’s secretary.
