The Rivers Peace Initiative, has commended President Bola Tinubu for convening a peace meeting with the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, Gov. Siminalayi Fubara, Assembly Speaker Martins Amaewhule and other lawmakers.
The Convener of the Group, Mr Obinna Ebogidi, commended Tinubu in a statement issued in Port Harcourt, on Friday.
He said the group was pleased that the reconciliatory meeting ended with an agreement to end the political crisis in the state.
Ebogidi described President Tinubu’s action as a demonstration of statesmanship and a commitment to peace in Rivers and Nigeria at large.
He said the peace agreement was a much-needed step, following nearly two years of political crisis that severely impacted governance in Rivers.
Ebogidi noted that the reconciliation was long overdue, saying that choosing peace was better than allowing the crisis to continue.
The Convener also commended the suspended Gov. Siminalayi Fubara for prioritising peace and stability over political pride.
He called on the aggrieved Rivers State Assembly members to reciprocate the spirit of cooperation and work with the executive to refocus its attention on development.
Ebogidi also urged those who might be dissatisfied with the outcome of the reconciliation to exercise restraint and pursue their grievances through democratic means.
He said that the Rivers Peace Initiative would continue to monitor the implementation of the peace agreement.
He encouraged all parties to prioritise the welfare of the Rivers people.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
