WATCH THE VIDEO HERE THE newly elected Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government, Rivers state, Israel Abosi, has assumed control of the council secretariat in Isiokpo. This takeover happened less than 24 hours after arsonists set the secretariat on fire yesterday. This morning, Abosi arrived at the scene, accompanied by his deputy, newly elected councillors, and a crowd of supporters, some of whom were vigilante members brandishing firearms and shooting into the air. The group chanted solidarity songs and openly challenged their political opponents to approach the secretariat. Both the Ikwerre and Emohua Local Government council secretariats were torched the previous day, following the withdrawal of police officers stationed at the 23 council secretariats by Commissioner of Police Kayode Egbetokun. The situation has since escalated into chaos, with blame and counter-blame circulating. In response, President Bola Tinubu has directed the Nigerian Police Force to ensure the security of the 23 local government secretariats.
