The Rivers State House of Assembly has brought forward its resumption date and will reconvene plenary today, earlier than the previously scheduled date of January 26.
The sudden return comes amid a deepening political struggle between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Naijaonpoint understands that a majority of lawmakers in the Rivers Assembly are loyal to Wike, many of whom have openly pledged to oppose Fubara’s political agenda ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The ongoing power tussle has fuelled anxiety and uncertainty across the oil‑rich Niger Delta state.
The development comes a day after Wike declared that all political parties in Rivers have effectively merged into a single coalition supporting President Bola Tinubu’s re‑election bid.
Wike made the remarks on Wednesday at a stakeholders’ event in Asari‑Toru Local Government Area, framing the new political alignment as a departure from traditional party politics toward a unified movement aimed at advancing state interests.
“In Rivers, we don’t have any party now. What we have is the Renewed Hope Family. It’s a rainbow coalition,” the former governor said.
Wike emphasised that the coalition, part of the broader Renewed Hope Family initiative, has brought together former political rivals to jointly back President Tinubu and pursue local political goals.
He added, “If you don’t belong to this family, then forget it. After delivering President Tinubu, this family will produce everything as far as the state is concerned, governorship and assembly seats.”
