WATCH THE VIDEO HERE THE Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Rivers State have asked the police, who have taken control of local government secretariats in the state, to vacate the premises. This request was made today during an emergency meeting of the state administrative council at the NLC secretariat in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State. During the meeting, three main issues were discussed: the formation and installation of caretaker committees in the 23 local government areas, the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s proposal for a state of emergency in the state, and the police occupation of council secretariats. The NLC Chairman in Rivers State, Alex Agwanwor, recognized the police’s efforts to ensure peace but emphasized that preventing workers from accessing their workplaces violates their rights. He called upon the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun to direct the Rivers State Commissioner of Police Olatunji Disu to allow workers to enter their offices and perform their lawful duties. The labor unions cautioned that if their request is disregarded, they will mobilize their members to reclaim their offices. The NLC leader in reference to the APC’s state of emergency proposal, noted that such a suggestion is not in the state’s best interests. The TUC Chairman, Ikechukwu Onyefuru, also explained why it is unreasonable to advocate for a state of emergency in Rivers State.
