PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu has cautioned political leaders to avoid actions that could destabilize Nigeria’s democracy, stressing that citizens cannot benefit from good governance in an atmosphere of unrest.
In a nationwide broadcast today, Tinubu lifted the six-month state of emergency in Rivers State, reinstating Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and members of the State House of Assembly.
“The people who entrusted us with their votes expect to enjoy the dividends of democracy. That goal cannot be achieved in an environment poisoned by violence, anarchy, and manipulative politics,” Tinubu said.
He emphasized the importance of cooperation between the executive and legislature at both state and federal levels, urging political stakeholders to set aside divisions and work for peace and progress.
The state of emergency was declared on March 18, 2025, after a prolonged standoff between Governor Fubara and lawmakers loyal to former governor Nyesom Wike.
Tinubu suspended the governor and Assembly members, installing a sole administrator to oversee the state—a move that sparked controversy, with critics accusing him of violating the Constitution while supporters defended it as necessary to restore order.
Fubara later met Tinubu twice in Lagos and also reconciled with Wike, with both men publicly declaring an end to their political feud.
Tinubu’s latest move signals a return to democratic governance in Rivers, though he warned that the country’s progress depends on political harmony and the rejection of selfish power struggles.
