There appears to be another fight flaring up behind the scenes between Road House remake director Doug Liman and Amazon MGM over the franchise. Now, two sequels to the action drama film might go head-to-head against each other.

Liman’s Road House revival, which starred Jake Gyllenhaal and Conor McGregor, was an overnight sensation. However, the growing tension regarding Amazon MGM’s decision to go straight to streaming despite promising the director in their original agreement that the film would get a theatrical release.

As a result of the feud, he decided to buy the rights to produce his own sequel directly from the original film’s writer, R. Lance Hill, while the studio is in the process of making its own follow-up. Liman’s movie will be titled Road House: Dylan and won’t feature Gyllenhaal or have any connection to the first remake. It will be a continuation of Hill’s iteration of the franchise, picking up where his story left off.

Amazon MGM’s Road House 2 will be directed by Ilya Naishuller and feature Gyllenhaal. It will also see the return of Dave Bautista, Aldis Hodge, and Leila George. The sequel won’t be released in theaters and will go directly to streaming on Amazon Prime again, just like the first one did.

While plot details for both sequels are still shrouded in mystery, the legal battle between the creators is not. Hill, who wrote Road House in 1989, says he regained ownership of the movie’s script under Section 203 of the U.S. Copyright Act. This rule supposedly allows writers to take back the rights of their work 35 years after they sold them.

Obviously, Amazon MGM had a huge problem with Hill and disagreed with his statements. The studio argued that the script was sold through Hill’s company (Lady Amos Inc.), which means it is considered “work for hire”, so he can’t just take it back. This led to the writer suing them for copyright infringement regarding the Road House remake.

The legal battle between Hill and Amazon MGM is currently ongoing and has not been resolved at the time of this article’s publication.
