Robert Pattinson Has A Surprising Response About Potential Return For Another Twilight Movie

Robert Pattinson’s Twilight franchise return gets a surprisingly optimistic response from the star. Based on the book series by author Stephenie Meyer, the hit YA fantasy romance series ran for five successful films from 2008 to 2012, with Pattinson playing mysterious vampire Edward Cullen alongside Kristen Stewart’s Bella Swan.

13 years after bidding farewell to the franchise with The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, Pattinson reveals in a new lie detector interview for Vanity Fair opposite his Die My Love costar Jennifer Lawrence that he would actually consider returning as Edward. Oh, yeah, for sure,” the actor says.

When Lawrence expresses shock at Pattinson’s answer and suggests he shouldn’t, Pattinson continues: “It would be great. I like taking jobs off younger actors. I want to play 17 again.” Though Pattinson’s tone suggests he could be joking, the lie detector indicates that he’s being truthful.

Since departing the YA franchise, Pattinson has been fairly intentional about steering his career in a new direction. The actor took on a number of roles in smaller or less commercial movies in the years that followed Breaking Dawn Part 2, including the likes of The Rover (2014), Good Time (2017), High Life (2018), and The Lighthouse (2019). His latest film is Lynne Ramsay’s Die My Love.

In more recent years, however, the actor has returned to major blockbuster projects, appearing in Tenet (2020) and, of course, The Batman (2022). With The Batman: Part 2 confirmed to release in 2027, Pattinson is clearly not averse to participating in major franchises once more, and this seemingly extends to more Twilight.

No new Twilight movie is currently in development, but the film franchise about an unlikely human-vampire romance was a highly successful venture. Together, the five movies grossed over $3.3 billion at the box office. The boom of YA movie adaptations, however, is now considered to be at an end after its heyday from around the mid-2000s to the mid-2010s.

While Pattinson may be open to returning for another installment, it’s unclear whether Stewart would be as well. It’s also worth noting that the continuation of the Twilight book series would make another movie somewhat complicated. Following Breaking Dawn, there have been two new installments, including one that gender-swaps Edward and Bella, and another that retells events of the first book from Edward’s perspective.

Meyer did confirm in 2020 that she’s working on two new books in the Twilight universe, and either one of these could presumably open the door for an Edward return. Times have definitely changed since Breaking Dawn Part 2, though, and it’s not clear how much of an appetite there is to see these novels turned into big-screen movies, even with Pattinson open to reprising his role.
