New details have emerged about Rod Wave’s arrest last week.
Rapper Rod Wave was taken into custody in Atlanta on November 7 after police allegedly discovered firearms, drugs, and suspected lean during a traffic stop.
According to reports from Atlanta News First, officers say they observed the Florida native running a stop sign and speeding through a neighborhood in Northwest Atlanta around 7:30 p.m.
The 25-year-old musician, whose real name is Rodarius Green, was driving approximately 45 mph in a 35 mph zone before pulling into a gas station.
When the officer activated his lights, Rod reportedly stopped his vehicle and was informed that he was being arrested for reckless driving. During a search, police say they found a .40 caliber Glock handgun with a high-capacity magazine in his waistband and a baby bottle containing about one ounce of purple liquid, suspected to be lean.
Inside the vehicle, officers also claim to have located more suspected Promethazine, Oxycodone pills, a Sig Sauer P320 9mm pistol, and a backpack filled with cash. The passenger, identified as Jamond Byner, was found with a small amount of marijuana, according to the warrant.
Both men were arrested. Rod was charged with reckless driving, two counts of possession of a controlled substance, and possession of a firearm or knife. Byner was charged with possession of a firearm and two counts of drug possession. Authorities said both denied owning the drugs that were found.
Following the arrest, Rod’s attorney, Drew Findling, accused the police department of “unjustly” profiling and “unlawfully” arresting his client.
“The arresting officer is part of the Atlanta Police Department’s Crime Suppression Unit, a group known for aggressive tactics and an emphasis on high arrest numbers rather than real public safety. Mr. Green was targeted as part of this quota-driven approach. We plan to challenge this arrest and the violation of his rights in court,” said Findling to XXL.
Rod Wave and Byner were released on November 8 after posting bond. The incident occurred just hours after Rod received his first Grammy nomination.
