Rotimi Oyedepo, the newly appointed director of public prosecutions (DPP) in the federal ministry of justice, has formally assumed office.
President Bola Tinubu approved Oyedepo’s appointment in December 2025.
A senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Oyedepo was transferred from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) into the federal civil service to take up the role.
He succeeds Abubakar Babadoko, who retired on December 31, 2025, after completing the mandatory eight-year tenure as director.
In a statement on Tuesday, Oyedepo pledged to strengthen the nation’s public prosecution system through professionalism, independence and strict adherence to due process and the rule of law.
He thanked President Tinubu and Lateef Fagbemi, attorney-general of the federation, for the confidence reposed in him, noting that prosecutorial independence and integrity will guide his tenure.
“The credibility of the justice system depends largely on the integrity of prosecutorial decisions,” he said.
“Prosecutorial decisions under my leadership will be guided solely by law, evidence, and the public interest, anchored on fairness, diligence, and integrity.”
Oyedepo said his administration will prioritise strengthening institutional capacity and building a “credible, formidable and future-ready public prosecution system”.
“I look forward to working collaboratively to advance justice reform and uphold public trust in the system,” he added.
