Russell Crowe’s new WW2 courtroom movie, Nuremberg, sees a major Rotten Tomatoes improvement ahead of its release. Crowe is set to play Nazi war criminal Hermann Göring, who is being evaluated by a United States psychiatrist, Douglas Kelley (Rami Malek), to determine if he can take the stand at the infamous Nuremberg trials. The courtroom drama is set to release on November 7.
Now, Nuremberg is experiencing an unexpected critical boost ahead of its United States release. As of writing, ...-WW2 movie has a 67% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 24 reviews. This score is a major improvement from where Nuremberg started. After the movie’s premiere at TIFF this past September, it debuted with a meager 40% score, which is considered “Rotten” under the site’s standards.
This is an unusual trend for new releases, as reviews typically lean more positive at the beginning, which is then followed by more negative reviews. However, Nuremberg is experiencing the opposite phenomenon, which has led to a 27% increase after a month.
Among those critics underwhelmed by Nuremberg was ScreenRant‘s Gregory Nussen, who gave a 3 out of 10 stars. They argued that the WW2 movie suffered from a lost tone and inconsistent story, saying: “Nuremberg is more confounding than it is true to its own intentions.”
Despite the issues, nearly all critics agree that the one saving grace is Crowe’s performance, alongside the supporting cast, like Malek and Michael Shannon. As a result, this has raised the possibility that Crowe could get some Oscar buzz for Best Actor. Plus, this Rotten Tomatoes boast occurs at the perfect time, as the award season is already underway.
Crowe has received three Academy nominations and ultimately won one in 2001 for Best Actor for Gladiator. However, it’s been nearly 23 years since the award-winning actor last received an Academy Award nomination. Nevertheless, it’s already panning out to be a very competitive award season for the Best Actor category, with names like Leonardo DiCaprio for One Battle After Another and Timothée Chalamet for Marty Supreme.
Nuremberg was written and directed by James Vanderbilt, who also penned The Amazing Spider-Man, Abigail, and several recent Scream movies. The story is adapted from the 2013 book The Nazi and the Psychiatrist by Jack El-Hai.
Nuremberg will be released in theaters on November 7, 2025. It will come out just 13 days before the 80th anniversary of when the trials started in 1945.
