Sam and Dean's Next Supernatural Foe: Zombie LARPers

young sam and dean from early supernatural

Supernatural’s sequel series is pitting the Winchester brothers against zombies, after a LARP gone wrong raises the dead. Dynamite Entertainment’s Supernatural comic is serving up more “Season 1”-era stories for fans who can’t get enough of Sam and Dean, and as the series continues to find its footing, it’s next adventure has “potential classic” written all over it.

Supernatural #3 is written by Greg Pak, with art by Eder Messias. In the issue, the Winchesters will get involved with “a group of live-action role players have recently survived a mysterious attack.

The synopsis says the LARPers are “determined to save their friend” who was left behind, but it also perhaps spoils the friend’s undead fate.

Supernatural’s Sam And Dean Are Set To Fight Zombies After A Live-Action Roleplay Gone Awry

The debut issue of Dynamite’s Supernatural reintroduced to young Dean and Sam Winchester, pitting them against a demonic “imp,” and possibly introducing the comic’s “Big Bad.” The second issue took the brothers to Las Vegas, where they encountered a leprechaun. So far, the series has been surprisingly light on violence, gore, and death.

That may very well change with Supernatural #3. Here is the full synopsis for the story:

IT’S ALL FUN AND GAMES UNTIL SOMEBODY GETS TURNED INTO A ZOMBIE! Sam and Dean find themselves in a small town in Massachusetts, where a group of live-action role players have recently survived a mysterious attack in the woods that left one of their members missing. Determined to save their friend, the LARPers are heading back into the forest for a new adventure, but this time they’ll be armed with real weapons — as well as the hard-won occult knowledge of the accompanying Winchester brothers!

The implication is that the Winchesters, along with a group of LARPers, will battle zombies. It seems likely the LARPers’ missing friend will be one of them. As an enemy, zombies present a chance for some bloodshed, though whether it will be scary is another question.

That is, so far the Supernatural comic has had a lighter tone, and the synopsis for Supernatural #3 gives the impression that this will continue. Across fifteen seasons of television, Supernatural often veered between comedy and tragedy, often within a single episode; the new Supernatural comic might go dark at some point, but for now it is having fun.

Supernatural’s New “Season One” Adventures Are Light On Melodrama, Focusing On Sam And Dean’s Dynamic Instead

The New Comic Series Is All About The Winchesters’ Evolving Relationship

The Supernatural comic is set late in Season One of the show. A big part of the reason for this was so that the book could embrace the early “Monster of the Week” formula of the series, while avoiding entanglement with its increasingly complicated heaven/hell mythology. It’s clear now it also allows for more comedy, and less melodrama.

Supernatural broke fans’ hearts repeatedly over the years. So far, Dynamite’s Supernatural is focused more on giving fans a chance to savor more of Sam and Dean’s early dynamic. Author Greg Pak has already nailed their relationship in Supernatural’s early issues, and it seeks to continue that with a fun adventure pitting the Winchesters and their allies against the undead.

Supernatural #3 will be available December 17, 2025 from Dynamite Entertainment.
