Ever since he returned to the Marvel franchise through Spider-Man: No Way Home, there has been more hope than ever that Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker will get another solo film. The actor became the first big-screen iteration of the Marvel icon, as he headlined his own Spider-Man trilogy through Sam Raimi.

However, it’s not just audience members who want to see Spider-Man 4 happen with the duo, but also members of Hollywood. The Batman and The Batman – Part II co-writer Mattson Tomlin recently responded to a user on X about whether there is any progress on his attempt to get the fourth installment made. He gave the following response:

The scribe stressed that “Slow and steady wins the race. There won’t be anything to say about that for a long time (if ever!) because it involves a lot of people and politics and things going right that have nothing to do with me.” However, Tomlin added,“but I haven’t gotten a “no” yet!”

The Batman franchise screenwriter has been advocating to pen a story for Maguire’s web-crawler where he is “juggling being a husband and father,” as he shared his pitch on X back on July 30, 2025. At the time of this story’s publication, Sony Pictures has not made any public statements on Tomlin’s previous or latest comments.

The cancelled Spider-Man 4 movie was initially slated to arrive in May 2011, as Raimi and Maguire were set to continue the world that had been built through the first three films. However, following multiple creative differences behind the scenes, Sony brought the franchise to an end and rebooted the property under Marc Webb with The Amazing Spider-Man in 2012, starring Andrew Garfield.

Raimi has made it clear that he is open to revisiting his Spider-Man universe, after the massive success of Tom Holland’s 2021 installment featuring Maguire and Garfield. He stated in an interview with Moviepilot on April 28, 2022, that “I didn’t think it was possible but after jumping back in with the multiverse I realized just like Doctor Strange does, anything is possible now. So I’m completely open to it.”

Maguire has also been on the record that he is down to suit up as the Marvel web-crawler once more, as he expressed his desire in the book, Spider-Man No Way Home: The Official Movie Special, released on February 28, 2023, where he gave the following comments:

Tobey Maguire: I love these films and I love all of the different series. If these guys called me and said, “Would you show up tonight to hang out and goof around?” or “Would you show up to do this movie or read a scene or do a Spider-Man thing?”, it would be a “yes!” Because why wouldn’t I want to do that?

Kirsten Dunst, who played Mary-Jane Watson in the trilogy, has been open about returning for a possible return for Spider-Man 4, stating on October 3, 2025, that she would love to explore her and Maguire’s characters as parents. The actress shared, “I feel like that is an interesting movie, right? Me and Tobey doing that again…with kids.”

As far as a return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe is concerned, Garfield stated in an interview with GQ on October 9, 2025, that he and Maguire will not be in Avengers: Doomsday. While Spider-Man 4 for the veteran isn’t on the table, Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios have Spider-Man: Brand New Day arriving on July 31, 2026.
