The Korean technology giant has been long exploring ways to make its watches a comprehensive healthcare tool. To that end, it added a temperature sensor to the Galaxy Watch 5, allowing female users to track, manage, and forecast menstrual cycles. In January this year, the company’s head of digital healthcare, Hon Pak, revealed that it has put in significant investment to develop noninvasive blood sugar monitoring technology for its wearables.
Pak didn’t provide specifics but suggested that Samsung was on the verge of achieving the goal. The topic resurfaced during his recent meeting with the advisory board members of Samsung Health. The meeting at the Samsung Medical Center in Seoul earlier this month also touched on health topics like diabetes, arrhythmia, hypertension, and the use of AI to enhance Samsung Health, but blood sugar monitoring was a key takeaway.
The industry now expects Samsung to add the feature to the Galaxy Watch 7 series. If things pan out as expected, it would be a game-changer. However, the company may still classify the new watches as electronic devices rather than health devices. This is because health devices fall under a stricter set of regulations. Samsung will show a disclaimer that you should only use health data from the watch for information purposes and not for the detection of any disease.
Samsung’s Galaxy Ring could also get the new feature
Samsung will soon add a new category of devices under its wearable lineup. It is preparing to release its first smart ring later this year. The company has already revealed a few tidbits about the Galaxy Ring. It may also bring the device to the next Galaxy Unpacked event in July where the Galaxy Watch 7 will break cover alongside new foldables.
Official teasers and rumors suggest Samsung plans to make Galaxy Ring a comprehensive health monitoring device that complements its watches. Users can wear it as a substitute for their Galaxy Watch at night. As such, the Galaxy Ring could also boast blood sugar monitoring technology.
