Samsung may have made some progress on the development of its next Fan Edition (FE) smartphone, the Galaxy S24 FE. The first One UI test firmware build for the unannounced device recently made it to the company’s server, hinting at ongoing development. The phone may arrive in late 2024 or early 2025.

Galaxy S24 FE test firmware build spotted on Samsung’s server

Samsung’s decision to skip the Galaxy S22 FE cast doubts over the future of the Fan Edition lineup but it lives on. The company is preparing to add a new model to the lineup later this year. We exclusively revealed last month that the Galaxy S24 FE will bear the model numbers SM-S721B, SM-S721U, SM-S721W, and SM-S721N. These are identifiers for the global version, US version, Canadian version, and Korean version, respectively.

A test firmware build spotted on Samsung’s server by X user @tarunvats33 reveals the company has begun developing the One UI experience for the Galaxy S24 FE. The first test firmware has the build number S721BXXU0AXE3. This is the global version of the phone, though the One UI experience is unchanged everywhere. More information about the phone should surface in the coming months as Samsung continues its development.

That said, previous leaks have revealed a few things about the upcoming FE phone. Unlike the Galaxy S23 FE, which features a generation-old SoC, the Galaxy S24 FE will reportedly get the latest flagship chipset from Qualcomm. Rumors say it will run on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, the same as the Galaxy S24 Ultra. In some markets, Samsung could ship it with the Exynos 2400, something it also did with the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+.

The Galaxy S24 FE is also said to feature up to 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 256GB of UFS 4.0 storage. The 128GB storage variant might use UFS 3.1 because Samsung doesn’t make 128GB storage chips with UFS 4.0 standard. The phone could pack a 4,500mAh battery with 25W charging and a 6.4/6.5-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display. Details are scarce but the new FE phone could also get a camera hardware upgrade.

The next major Samsung launch event is just two months away

It hasn’t been long since Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S24 series and we are already starting to talk about its next Galaxy Unpacked event. Scheduled to take place in Paris, France on July 10 (date and place not official yet), the event will bring the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 foldables and the Galaxy Watch 7 series. Rumors and leaks about the Galaxy S24 FE could pick up pace following the release of these products.
