Students across several states in northern Nigeria have returned to school after nearly two months at home.
The educational institutions were shut down by state governments over worsening insecurity late in 2025.
The closures were ordered after a spike in attacks on schools by bandits, including raids on schools in Kebbi and Niger states.
In October and November 2025, a number of northern states announced the temporary shutdown of primary and secondary schools, citing intelligence reports and rincidents that raised fears of mass kidnappings.
Education commissioners in affected states said the decision, though disruptive, was necessary to protect lives, as security agencies struggled to contain bandits in remote communities.
State governments said the decision to reopen schools followed what they described as an improvement in security conditions.
In several states, authorities announced additional safety measures, including the deployment of security personnel to vulnerable schools, restrictions on movement during school hours, and renewed engagement with local vigilante groups.
