Scream & Urban Legend Stars To Unite In Gen X Slasher Parody

Skeet Ulrich and Alicia Witt will co-star in a new horror-comedy movie. One of Skeet Ulrich’s best known roles is that of Billy Loomis, one of the original Ghostface killers in the Scream franchise. The success of Scream caused a boom in self-aware slashers in the late 1990s, and Alicia Witt played final girl Natalie in one of the most prominent entries, 1998’s Urban Legend.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Witt and Ulrich have both joined the cast of the upcoming horror-comedy movie The Big Kill. The Live Nation Studios movie is currently in production under the auspices of director Todd Berger (who wrote The Curse of Bridge Hollow).

The movie, which was penned by The Daily Show‘s Daniel Radosh and will feature a soundtrack chock-full of 1990s classics, will be a satire of Gen X culture that follows a group of friends being threatened by a killer while gathered in a cabin in the middle of nowhere after a funeral.

The title and premise of the movie reference 1983’s The Big Chill, Lawrence Kasdan’s 1983 dramedy starring Tom Berenger, Glenn Close, William Hurt, Kevin Kline, and Jeff Goldblum that followed a group of aging baby boomers grappling with interpersonal tensions after a funeral and was soundtracked with 1960s and 1970s classics.

Just like The Big Chill, the new movie will have a robust cast. The ensemble includes Megan Suri (Never Have I Ever), Jolene (Star Trek: Enterprise), Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite), Pete Holmes (Crashing), Natasha Leggero (Another Period), and comedians Trevor Wallace, Morgan Jay, and Steph Tolev.

The Big Chill soundtrack, which features songs such as “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” “My Girl,” and “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” sold remarkably well, eventually going 6× Platinum as of 1998.

Berger says that he adored Scream when it came out but noticed that the characters in slasher movies weren’t aging with him, so he was excited to helm a horror comedy about fellow Gen Xers with kids and mortgages and ruminations on existential dread.”

The Big Kill is being produced by MXN Entertainment’s Mason Novick and executive produced by Live Nation Studios’ Ryan Kroft. Kroft says that “horror plus comedy set to ’90s music equals a resounding yes for Live Nation Studios” and suggests that The Big Kill is destined to be a horror hit.

Novick adds that “it’s so important to deliver on both the laughs and scares” and that is why we’re so fortunate to have a cast that is both legacy horror actors and a bunch of really funny comedians.

Ulrich has already dabbled in Gen X nostalgia multiple times, having appeared in the legacy sequels Scream (2022) and Scream VI and starred in the throwback teen drama Riverdale, which also featured Gen X icons such as Luke Perry and Molly Ringwald.

In addition to bringing their legacy status to the movie, both Skeet Ulrich and Alicia Witt have continued to sharpen their skills in the horror genre since their 1990s classics, with the former set to appear alongside his Scream co-star Matthew Lillard in the upcoming Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 and the latter having appeared in the 2024 horror hit Longlegs.
