The crisis rocking the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has deepened following the expulsion of its former National Chairman, Shehu Musa Gabam, and the National Youth Leader, Mr Ogbonna Chukwuma Uchechukwu, over allegations of financial irregularities, misconduct, and abuse of office.

Naijaonpoint reports that the decision was announced on Thursday in Abuja after the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) adopted a White Paper based on the findings of an independent disciplinary panel.

National Publicity Secretary, Mr Rufus Aiyenigba, told journalists that the expulsion was necessary to restore discipline and integrity within the party.

Aiyenigba recalled that Gabam, Uchechukwu and the National Auditor, Mr Clarkson Nnadi, were suspended on June 24, 2025, after a prima facie case of misconduct was established.

To ensure fairness, an independent Disciplinary Committee was inaugurated on July 4, 2025. It carried out a two-week probe and submitted its report on July 18, which was later reviewed and adopted by the NWC on August 15, paving way for Thursday’s decision.

Those affected include:

Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam – Former National Chairman (dismissed and expelled)

Mr Ogbonna Chukwuma Uchechukwu – Former National Youth Leader (dismissed and expelled)

Mr Clarkson Nnadi – Former National Auditor (relieved after voluntary resignation)

Eight others – Adamu Abubakar Modibbo, Abubakar Dogara, Nuraddeen Bisalla, Solsuema Osaro, Ambo Ekpeyong, Eluwa Ifeanyi Henry, Humphrey Unwukaeze, and Judith Israel Shuaibu – were also expelled for disloyalty and unlawful entry into the party’s national secretariat on July 28, 2025.

Speaking further, Aiyenigba said the NWC acted unanimously and that the sanctions take effect immediately.

“As law-abiding members of the SDP, we cannot condone acts that undermine our constitution and unity. The expulsions were taken to protect the image of the party and restore discipline,” he said.

He added that reforms recommended in the White Paper would be implemented to strengthen internal governance and accountability.

The SDP leadership reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability and respect for the rule of law.
