The Senate has declared that no new state will be created in Nigeria without undergoing a comprehensive constitutional review process involving citizens and key stakeholders.
Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu made this known while speaking to journalists in Ilawe-Ekiti, revealing that 61 proposals for state creation have been submitted from various parts of the country.
Adaramodu stressed that the National Assembly alone cannot create states, as the process requires a thorough assessment of demographic, geographic, and historical data, alongside public hearings where both proponents and opponents of each proposal can present their views.
“State creation is a serious matter that demands auditing demographic, geographic, and historical facts. In some instances, even groups within the requesting states are not united in support,” he said.
He added that all requests will be evaluated by the constitutional review committee before any decision is made.
“As it stands, no state has been recommended or approved for creation. All factors must be carefully considered before the National Assembly, not just the Senate, can take a position,” Adaramodu stated.
