The Senate screening of the Minister of Defence nominee, retired Gen. Christopher Musa, was momentarily stalled on Wednesday after it descended into a rowdy session.
The disruption was triggered by Senator Mohammed Sani Musa (APC, Niger), who argued that the remainder of the screening should be held behind closed doors.
Trouble began shortly after the nominee had answered a few introductory questions. Senator Musa stood up to submit that, given the immense security challenges facing the nation and the nominee’s background, a public session was unnecessary.
He argued: “Owing to the sensitivity of this position, and the fact that we have already held a closed-door session with the nominee, I do not think there is any need for an open screening.”
Senator Musa’s proposal immediately drew loud reactions and disapproval from various lawmakers across the chamber, leading to a heated argument and a rowdy atmosphere.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio intervened to restore order, acknowledging Senator Musa’s view but insisting that the public screening must continue.
Akpabio maintained that Nigerians deserved to hear from the nominee publicly, especially considering the grave security situation in the country and the importance of the Defence Ministry.
The Senate proceeded with the public confirmation hearing after the intervention.
Naijaonpoint reports that General Musa’s nomination followed the recent resignation of the former Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru, who cited health concerns.
The Senate had previously emphasized the urgency of this screening to reinforce security operations across the country.
