The Senate, on Wednesday, commenced the screening of Senator Jimoh Ibrahim (APC, Ondo South) following his nomination by President Bola Tinubu as a non-career ambassador.

The billionaire businessman and lawmaker appeared before the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, chaired by Senator Sani Bello (APC, Niger), where he was warmly received in line with Senate tradition.

Presenting his Curriculum Vitae, Senator Ibrahim highlighted his achievements in public service, law, business, and education. In line with the red chamber’s customary courtesy to serving and former lawmakers, the senator was asked to “take a bow and go,” drawing applause from colleagues.

Senator Ibrahim is among the 68 ambassadorial nominees, both career and non-career, recently forwarded to the Senate by President Tinubu for confirmation.

The nominations are part of what the Presidency has described as an effort to “reposition Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives and enhance its global diplomatic footprint.”

Resignation To Trigger Ondo South Senate Vacancy

In accordance with Section 68(1)(d) of the 1999 Constitution, Ibrahim’s eventual confirmation and acceptance of the ambassadorial role will require him to vacate his Senate seat.

This development has already begun to stir political activity in Ondo South Senatorial District, with consultations intensifying among aspirants jostling to replace him.

Though no major declaration has been made, multiple political figures are reportedly exploring entry into the race, including ex-lawmakers, technocrats, and grassroots politicians.

Senator Nicholas Tofowomo – former senator for Ondo South;

Barrister Morayo Lebi – former APC senatorial aspirant;

Akinfolarin Mayowa – former member, House of Representatives;

Matthew Oye Oyerinmade (MATO) – ex-senatorial aspirant;

Princess Oladunni Odu – former Secretary to the State Government;

Jumoke Akindele – ex-Speaker, Ondo State House of Assembly;

Eniola Akinsola – former Chief Press Secretary;

Boye Oyewumi, Diran Iyantan, and Otunba Kayode Fakuyi.
