Senate to begin ₦49.7t budget defense, sets January 31 for passage

THE Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, Adeola Olamilekan, has confirmed that January 31, 2025, is the tentative date for passing the ₦49.7 trillion budget for 2025, as the committee prepares to start the budget defense tomorrow.

Olamilekan made this announcement today during a meeting with the heads of relevant committees regarding the framework for the 2025 Budget Defense Session, which will guide the budget process toward its eventual approval.

He also noted that when the Senate resumes on January 14, 2025, it will immediately enter a two-week break to facilitate the budget defense process.

Additionally, a retreat is scheduled for Thursday to discuss the budget, which will include ministries, departments, agencies, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders for further consultation on the budget proposal.

According to the schedule, from January 15 to 18, committees are expected to report back on their documents, followed by the Appropriation Committee’s collation and finalization of these documents.

Recognizing the tight timeline, Olamilekan stressed the importance of lawmakers increasing their efforts.

He urged his colleagues to skip their holidays and begin work on the proposed budget, highlighting the necessity of handling the budget process efficiently and within the set timeframe.
