THE Senate has urged the Federal Government to increase budgetary allocations for federal universities in the 2025 budget to address the pressing challenges faced by Nigerian universities.

The lawmakers further resolved to direct the relevant Senate committee to collaborate with the ministers of finance, education, and other key ministries to urgently address the escalating brain drain affecting the nation.

This decision follows a motion raised by Senator Anthony Okorie, who expressed concern over the growing brain drain and the significant exodus of highly skilled professionals, particularly in academia, in search of better working conditions. This exodus, he warned, is widening the skill gap in the country’s workforce.

Senator Okorie also highlighted the inadequate remuneration and poor working conditions for Nigerian lecturers, pointing out that their pay, last reviewed over 15 years ago, is among the lowest globally, contributing to the ongoing loss of experienced academics to other countries.
