Senatorial Recall More Expensive Than Election – INEC Says, Declares Funds Availability

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has explained that the process of recalling a senator is more costly than conducting a regular senatorial election, due to the extensive logistics and manpower required. 

Speaking during an X Spaces discussion on Saturday titled “INEC Regulations and Guidelines for Recall 2024: BVAS and IREV – Facts and Myths,” INEC’s Special Adviser to the Chairman, Prof. Mohammed Kuna, outlined the challenges involved in a recall. 

“A recall process is like conducting an election itself. It requires mobilisation of staff, deployment of materials, technology, transportation, and more,” he said. 

He further noted that the process is even more demanding than a typical election. 

“A recall process is like conducting three senatorial district elections because we will go back to the field three times. It is more expensive than conducting a senatorial election,” Kuna added. 

Also speaking, the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi, reiterated that the commission would strictly follow legal procedures if a recall petition is submitted. 

“If constituents express the desire for a recall and fulfil the necessary requirements, we will proceed accordingly,” he assured. 

He also explained that if a National Assembly seat becomes vacant, INEC will conduct a by-election once notified by the presiding officers. 

On funding, Oyekanmi reassured Nigerians that INEC has made financial provisions for any electoral event, including a recall. 

“We prepare for all situations, as we are aware of the unpredictability of electoral events,” he said. 

INEC recently received a petition seeking the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District. 

The petition was received by INEC’s Secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony, on Monday at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
