Chairman of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Electoral Reform Committee, Monday Ubani, has stated that the Senate and the House of Representatives are ready to pass the new electoral law.
Speaking on Tuesday during an appearance on Arise Television, Ubani said that there is a sense of urgency within the Senate to pass the new electoral law.
Ubani asserted that all hands are on deck to ensure that the next election is conducted under a new legal framework.
“As I said earlier, the issue of sense of urgency has always been there. I have interacted with both chairmen of the electoral committees of the Senate and House of Representatives.
“They all expressed their readiness that this particular bill is passed so that the next election is conducted under a new legal framework.
“So that sense of urgency is there. When they resume this January, one of the bills the Senate should be able to consider is to harmonize the position of the House of Representatives and then send it to the president for assent.
“Now, with regards to issues of timeline, because timeline was not only considered with the issue of leadership but even the issue of going to challenge the election result itself.
“I think some of the days have been limited within which you can challenge. So, timeline is being considered,” he said.
