The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, and the Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (rtd), have both stressed Nigeria’s vital role in West African security, with the Defence Minister specifically commending the Armed Forces for their “swift response” that thwarted the recent coup attempt in the Benin Republic.

The pronouncements were made on Wednesday during the decoration ceremony for newly promoted senior officers at the Nigerian Army Command Officers’ Mess, Abuja.

Lt. Gen. Shaibu emphasized that Nigeria’s security is inextricably linked to the stability of its neighbors, reaffirming the Army’s commitment to collective defense and democratic governance.

“Our role in the security of the West African region is vital,” he said. “We must continue to support general efforts to deepen our lived experiences, secure our shared borders and uphold democratic governance as the key to the stability of each nation in the region.”

The COAS noted that the newly promoted senior officers are expected to contribute to national and regional stability through improved strategic leadership and operational readiness, demanding renewed “energy, foresight and commitment” in their new roles.

In his remarks, Minister of Defence Gen. Christopher Musa (rtd) specifically praised the Armed Forces for their rapid deployment during the attempted coup in the Benin Republic.

He highlighted the timeliness of the intervention, which helped prevent the destabilization of a neighboring state.

“Our prompt response made sure that the coup failed, and this is what the Armed Forces should always do,” he stated. “We must be ready 24/7 to respond to any threat whether against Nigeria or any of our regional allies.”

The Minister urged the newly promoted officers to lead with integrity, prioritize joint operations, and strengthen cooperation with other security agencies, noting that their decisions will directly impact national defense and regional peace efforts.
