Service chiefs appear before House of Representatives ad hoc committee for screening

House of reps

THE newly appointed Service Chiefs appeared before the House of Representatives Ad Hoc Committee today for a screening session, which is expected to take place behind closed doors.

The committee, chaired by Hon. Babajimi Benson, who also leads the House Committee on Defence, convened the session following the Senate’s confirmation of the nominees earlier in the week.

The Senate had confirmed Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Wahidi Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff, Rear Admiral Idi Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff, and Air Vice Marshal Kelvin Aneke as Chief of Air Staff.

Their confirmation came after a two-hour closed-door session where lawmakers questioned the nominees on strategies to strengthen national security and implement reforms across the armed forces.

The screening follows last week’s reshuffle by President Bola Tinubu, who appointed General Oluyede to succeed General Christopher Musa as Chief of Defence Staff.

Other appointments included Major General Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal Aneke as Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff.

The screening marks another step in formalizing the leadership transition within Nigeria’s military hierarchy as the new Service Chiefs prepare to assume full operational responsibilities.
