Abdulrahaman Ahmad, son of controversial Islamic cleric Sheikh Abubakar Gumi, has graduated from the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna.

Former senator, Shehu Sani, confirmed the development in a post on 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, where he shared a photograph of Gumi and his son.

“Sheikh Gumi’s son Abdulrahaman Ahmad graduated from the Nigerian Defence Academy. Congratulations and wishing him all the best in the service to our country,” Sani wrote.

According to sources who spoke with The Cable, the official graduation ceremony for the cadets is scheduled for Saturday, September 27, while the photograph circulating on social media was taken during a pre-graduation event.

Sheikh Gumi, who once served in the Nigerian Army and rose to the rank of captain before retirement, has in recent years become a strong advocate for dialogue with bandits.

He has repeatedly called on the government to treat armed groups with the same reintegration approach once adopted for Niger Delta militants.

Just on Saturday, Naijaonpoint understands that Gumi warned against jeopardising ongoing peace agreements between communities in Katsina State and leaders of bandit groups.

In a Facebook post, he urged security agencies and government officials to protect the fragile truce reached in Matazu, Faskari, and Sabuwa local government areas, where several wanted bandit kingpins were reportedly in attendance.

He maintained that dialogue remained the most viable path to ending banditry in the North.
