Vice President, Kashim Shettima, on Wednesday departed Abuja for Kebbi State on the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to meet with state officials and families of the students abducted from Government Girls Secondary School, Maga.
Naijaonpoint reports that the visit comes days after gunmen stormed the school, killing the Vice Principal, Malam Hassan Makuku, and abducting dozens of schoolgirls.
A statement signed by his media aide, Stanley Nwkocha, said the Vice President will meet with Governor Nasiru Idris, traditional rulers, security chiefs, and parents of the kidnapped students.
The presidential directive, according to the statement, is to assure the people of Kebbi State that the Federal Government is fully committed to the “quick and safe release” of the abducted girls.
During the visit, Shettima will also convey the President’s condolences and reaffirm the administration’s resolve to secure schools nationwide.
The statement disclosed that “He is joined by the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda; Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Bernard Doro; the Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim; and the Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Hajiya Zubaida Umar.”
The delegation is expected to meet with affected communities and assess the ongoing rescue operations.
President Tinubu had earlier condemned the attack, expressing sympathy to the families of the slain and the abducted.
He also postponed his scheduled trips to Johannesburg in South Africa and Luanda, Angola, to attend the 20th G20 Summit of leaders and the 7th AU-EU Summit, respectively.
