Vice President, Kashim Shettima, on Sunday, returned to Abuja after leading Nigeria’s delegation to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) held in Belém, Brazil.
At the conference, Shettima restated Nigeria’s commitment to a green transition, insisting that the country remains a strong voice in global climate discussions.
Naijaonpoint reports that he joined other world leaders, development partners, and business executives at the Leaders’ Climate Summit hosted by Brazil’s President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
The Vice President delivered Nigeria’s national statement titled “The Rational Soul of Nature.”
He urged world leaders to recognise the economic value of nature and allocate substantial funding to its protection and restoration.
According to him, such efforts must be driven through “predictable, equitable, and accessible funding mechanisms.”
Shettima stressed that Nigeria’s renewed climate agenda is not merely an aspiration but “a solemn national commitment to preserve the planet for future generations.”
Speaking on the sidelines of the summit, the Vice President held several bilateral meetings on carbon market cooperation.
Naijaonpoint learnt that these engagements are targeted at unlocking between 2.5 billion dollars and 3 billion dollars annually in carbon finance for Nigeria over the next decade, to support the country’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
