In a surprising turn of events, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has defeated the Labour Party (LP) at the polling unit of former Anambra State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
The result was announced at about 3:00 p.m. at Polling Unit 019, Agulu Ward 11, in Anaocha Local Government Area — the same unit where Obi had earlier cast his vote in the ongoing Anambra governorship election.
According to the official figures, the APC candidate, Nicholas Ukachukwu, secured 73 votes, while the Labour Party’s candidate, George Moghalu, garnered 57 votes. The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) trailed in third place with 38 votes.
The outcome has sparked surprise among observers, given Obi’s strong political influence in Anambra, particularly in Agulu, where he has consistently enjoyed massive support. During the 2023 presidential election, Obi swept the state with over 95 percent of the total votes cast.
Despite his active campaign efforts for the Labour Party’s candidate in the ongoing election, the result from his home polling unit signals a potential shift in the state’s political dynamics as vote collation continues across Anambra.
